This sketch is a still life image of 2 blocks of cheese and some biscuits on a plate. The sketch was done using pencil.

I think the image has great composition with the cheese at the top left hand corner. I don't quite think the plate is the correct shape as it should be but i don't think its noticeable to take something away from the image.

Facial expression

These three sketches are 5 minute self portraits, each one is pulling a different facial expression. The left image is confused, the middle is bored and the Right image is happy.

One thing I have noticed about all three of the images is that the nose is a bit different every time. This may be because I had my head at a different angle every time or more likely that I was focusing on a different part of the face more. The shading could have been worked on more but i  believe that for 5 minute drawings I show the emotion and have detail in the facial features.I think all three images show some emotion but out of the three I believe the right hand one works the best.

Facial anatomy

This focus of this piece is facial anatomy it shows lots of studies of facial parts of both the model and me. I studied these so I became more confident and skilled at drawing facial anatomy.  I believe it has greatly improved my skills in drawing faces.

The pieces all capture the shape of the focus point very well it is all proportional. The shading on the nose, eyes and upper lips all looks very realistic and it all looks like it’s in the right positions.

Tone and colour in skin

This session was about using colour to work out the correct tones in the skin. For this piece I used the pastel and I mixed colours to get the correct tone.

On most of the image the skin tone works well for example you can see the blue veins on the back of the models arms where the flesh is thinner. The image does have poor areas such as the hair and the hands but overall I believe it works well because of the skin tones.

Drapery on human anatomy

The focus of these few studies is drapery on human figures. One is of the model holding some translucent fabric the other is of some fabric draped over an arm.

The drapery on the first piece works well; you can see the folds of the drapery on both the fabric the model is holding and the fabric on the table. You can also tell what the fabric is like, you can tell the fabric over the knee is translucent. On the second piece it was done using natural lighting, this caused the problem of it being a very dark sketch. What it shows is my arm with a scarf draped over it. The scarf is dark grey on one side and light grey on the other side. The creases in the fabric look good which allows the viewer to tell that they are actual creases. My main concern is that the overall image is too dark and that i should have set up some artificial light

Natural forms in detail (still life)

Time taken approximately 20 mins

Time taken approximately 25 mins

This Session was about drawing natural items in high detail. I Used pencil for this because i wanted to have a lot of control of the the fine details in my image which charcoal and pastels don't give me. these 2 images are just specific parts of an overall arrangement of flowers and a pineapple.

Out of the 2 images i believe the flowers work better than the pineapple. The shape of the pineapple doesn't quite look correct, the shading could have been done better as it doesn't show the colour variation as much as it should do between the pineapple its self and the plate. The flowers however look good the shading is well done and you can tell were everything is going in the image, the only problem is that it looks like its floating on the page

Transparent surfaces, refraction and distortion (still life)

Time taken approximately 15 mins

Time take approximately 25 mins

This session focused on human made items with a clear or reflective surface. I used pencil  for this because i wanted to have a good amount of control over what i was doing than i would get from other types of media.

I am pleased with both the 2 images because you can clearly see the reflections and shadows very well. The second image of the brass vase I believe works the best you can see very clearly what the reflection is and the shading on it works as well which allows you to tell that its a shiny object.

Handling Complex information (landscape)

(The dark line down the middle is where i have had to connect the 2 images together)

Time taken approximately 40mins

This was done on the roof of the Chesham building at Bradford university. The focus of the exercise was to use impressionism to quickly get hight detail down on the page. For this exercise i decided to use the think chisel side of some graphic markers. I started applying a soft grey colour to map out the landscape, once this was done all over i started applying shading and darker tones to build up the detail.

The level of detail on some parts really work in this image such as the details on the mosque and the top right building.

Tonal value and mixing media (landscape)

Time taken approximately 30 mins

This is the interior of student central. As the title of this post suggests the idea for this session was mixing media so what i have done is drawn the image out using colour pastel then gone over this imagine in pencil to get the darker and more fine details.

I believe the location of this piece works really well just looking straight down the middle of the upper area. I especially like the golden arches at the very top with the shading done in pencil. The walls really stand out i now believe I should have shaded them a little bit so that they weren't total white.

Architecture (landscapes)

Time taken approximately 60 mins

This drawing is of the newly built part of Horton. This was done using a set of pencils. This piece was my first piece back after having a holiday in which I didn't do much drawing, I believe this has caused me to slow down a lot since last year which was one of the reasons why the drawing took me so long to do

This image doest work as well as i had hoped it would, I feel I rushed into doing the image and therefore didn't get good composition. This image lacks shading which could have made the image work better
